The construction of the Bydgoszcz Canal in its original course was completed in 1775. Its purpose was to connect, via the Brda and Noteć rivers, Poland’s two largest rivers—the Vistula and the Oder. At the end of the 18th century, Ernst Conrad Peterson proposed planting trees along the canal banks. Today, these have grown into magnificent trees forming the Green Promenade along the Bydgoszcz Canal.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the course of the Bydgoszcz Canal was slightly modified by creating over 1.6 km of a new route, which caused the area along the Old Bydgoszcz Canal to lose its former importance. However, it became an exceptional recreational space. It is certainly a globally unique green area, which is why it is worth taking some time to stroll along the canal at least once.

It is also a place where people and nature coexist; throughout the year you can meet ducks and swans there.
